Can You Get a Passport if You Owe Child Support?

Under the regulations of the U.S. Department of State, an obligor is not eligible to receive a U.S. passport if the obligor owes $2,500 or more in child support.  If the obligor owes $2,500 or more in child support and already has a passport, the State Department can limit, revoke or restrict the obligor from using such passport until the child support arrearages has been paid in full or payment arrangements with the child support enforcement agency has been made.

For obligors who have applied for a passport which has been denied and owe $2,500 or more in child support, he or she should consider making arrangements to pay child support owed with the appropriate state child support enforcement agency (i.e., Office of the Attorney General, Child Support Division).  Once the state child support enforcement agency reports to the State Department that acceptable payment arrangements have been made, the Department of Health and Human Services will then report such update to the State Department, which will undergo a verification process that could take 2-3 weeks.  Upon verification, the obligor’s application may then be processed normally.
